The West Witch (Black Horse Westerns)
Published in Hardcover by Robert Hale Ltd (01 August, 1995)
Author: Lance Howard
Average review score:

An unusual and spellbinding Western
I read this book in one sitting and found it to be an excellent mixutre of Western, mystery, humor and even a love story! The characters come alive and the prose is sharp, crisp and witty. A fun jaunt through the wild west. I highly recommend it and all books by this author.

A beautifully told story that is impossible to ever forget
This is the perfect book for anyone who has ever wondered how the real West compared with fictionalized accounts. Armed with a dime novel, private detective Quinton Hilcrest leaves his shambles of a life in Maine and heads to west to recover a fortune in jewels never found after the notorious Black Hood Bandits were killed.

Upon arriving Hilcrest discovers, much to his dismay, that things are not quite the way he thought they would be. The West is dirtier and more primitive than he had imagined, and his derringer and training in kung fu are less than adequate for his new circumstances. Aided by a down on his luck gambler and information from a newspaper editor who is as wide as she is tall, the newcomer manages to stir up the entire town. Hilcrest's quest turns up more than the treasure though. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful woman who has been branded a witch by the townspeople.

Howard is a master at writing exciting westerns. The dialogue and action in his books are superb. Quenton Hilcrest is a wonderful character. By using an outsider Howard creates a strong bond between the reader and the story's protagonist. The West Witch is a beautifully told story that is impossible to ever forget. Anything that Lance Howard writes is a "must read" for me.

Action Packed Western!
Wonderful mix of shoot 'em up action and mystery with interesting charcters and dry witty humor! I have read all this author's books and each is better than the last. My highest recommendation!

When Was I Five?
Being five is so much fun! It's hard to decide what is my favorite thing about my 5 year olds. This book definitely makes it clear what 5 years are capable of imagining! Their creativity esscalates in this book. It is a great book to read for the students on the first day of Kindergarten. They want to hear it over and over again! I like to read it to them as many times as they like to hear it!

When I Was Five
A yound boy describes his favorite things when he was "young" at the age of 5. He them compares them with his favorite things now that he is "old" at the age of 6. Great book for writing extensions for students. Excellent color illustrations and I would recommend this one for students from K through the 2nd grade, including the teachers.

When the Wind Stops
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins Publishers (September, 1987)
Authors: Charlotte Zolotow and Howard Knotts

A Beautiful book about the continuing nature of life . . .
I found this to be a beautifully written & illustrated book about the renewal of each day. The story begins with a little boy sad to see the day end and his mother explaining to him that the day ends so night can begin. . . The prose is soothing and imaginative . . . the message is about how they day can end for you, but it begins again in another place for someone else. . . it seems to me to be a gentle way of talking about letting go. . . letting go of the day, of the season, of the wind, of things, so that these things can carry on in a different way. I think it is a great way for a child to begin to understand about the finite nature of life. Also, is addresses the immediate and strong feeling of my toddler of NO NIGHT NIGHTS!!! The prose is so soothing and imaginative it actually lulled my child to sleep. The illustrations are colorful and beautiful. An EXCELLENT book.

A Story That Clears the Fog on Difficult Concepts
In easy language with good illustrations, this book will help children to understand why the day has to end, where the wind goes when it stops, where the waves go when they break on the sand, where does the rain go, etc.

The story flows like a poem, yet offers insight into complex concpets, and demonstrates life's eternal evolution and motion.

Inspiring story of the circle of life!
This is a soothing, inspiring book that illustrates the truth and meaning of the eternal circle of life. It is a comfort book, and a spiritual revelation. A must for Pagan parents, and all parents. The illustrations are deep and beautiful.

The Women's Guide to Ending Pain: An 8-Step Program
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (03 July, 2003)
Authors: Howard S. Smith and Debra Fulghum Bruce
Average review score:

A book on ENDING PAIN for women--recommend
I reviewed this book and am recommending it to my women clients. A comprehensive trade book, the authors have superb credentials. Dr. Smith is a pain expert and medical doctor yet gives a well-thought-out holistic program that includes exercise (such as yoga and stretching), dietary changes, natural therapies including botanicals, stress management, and hands-on touch therapies, among others. The book focuses on pain that's common to women such as headaches, menstrual cramps, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and other types and discusses how to best treat these with a multifaceted program. I'm keeping a copy on hand as a personal resource.

My doctor wrote this book!! Thank you.
I saw Dr. Smith when he was in Boston at Beth Israel (Harvard). He is the DEAREST, MOST COMPASSIONATE doctor I've ever known. I've suffered with chronic back pain for years, and Dr. Smith helped me find the right combination of therapies to resolve the pain and live my life again. This book is so totally him!! It is easy-to-read, compassionate, and helps women (like me) understand what is happening when we have pain. His treatment program is so conservative with many natural therapies listed and explained. He's the best--and this book reflects that.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Super guide for women only
I have been waiting for the release of this book ever since reading about it in a small magazine called OURSELVES. The book is everything I need--answers all my questions about pain and why I feel pain differently than my husband. It has superb remedies--both natural and medicine--for ending menstrual cramps, headaches, and back pain. I took notes and gave the book to a friend with fibromyalgia as there's a section on this, too.
Very refreshing, very revealing!! Finally--someone knows what women have endured and now WE know how to best treat it!

Wonderful Flying Machines: A History of U.S. Coast Guard Helicopters
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (November, 1996)
Authors: Barrett Thomas Beard and Howard B. Thorsen

PTom's a Ptop Drawer Ptero!
Tom is a gem. He's one of the few people who has written of Coast Guard Aviation who knows that of which he speaks, having been there and done it. This is not to disparage the various historians and popular authors such as Sebastian Junger who have tried to get a handle on what it is we do, but we Pterodactyls are a tight-lipped bunch to outsiders. But Tom is one of us, and we're glad he blabbed. He has done a meticulous study of Frank Erickson and the evolution of the search & rescue helicopter and the mundane, but necessary innovations such as the rescue hoist. Without the machinations that Frank went through, rescue at sea would be a very different business today. Many people do not understand that the United States Coast Guard INVENTED hoisting people from the water. Frank was brilliant, uncredited, and unknown, outside of CG Aviation. He was disdained by the seaplane community in the CG during his lifetime. The passage of time has proven Frank right. In his book, Tom grasped and articulated the struggle that Frank went through proving his theories and nicely packaged Igor Sikorsky's vision for the helicopter as a tool for humanitarian service. Even my non-flying friends enjoyed the book...which I recommend when they ask what the heck it is that I do for a living.

Very interesting and inlighening about Coast Guard aviation
This book kept me interested thru out. The story of LT Frank Erickson is one of persistance and will. I felt the books ending is what really made it all come together "The Sum of All dreams". The story of Michael Odom is a book within itself. This autor really did his home work and left me understanding the importance of helicopters and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Strong-willed officers advance the cause of whirly birds.
U. S. Coast Guard aviator, Lt. Frank Erickson, on December 7, 1941, saw sailors struggling in the waters of Pearl Harbor. He remembered an article about a small helicopter developed by Igor Sikorsky. Erickson felt here was the ideal rescue tool for the U.S. Coast Guard aviators to help those in distress. From this time forward Erickson worked toward this goal. In the end, it cost him his career. Erickson ran head-long into those officers who felt seaplanes were the ideal rescue device. The book traces the struggle to have the helicopter accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard. One of the interesting currents running through the book is that of strong-willed officers fighting for a cause and willing to sacrifice their careers to advance it. This is one of those rare histories that show the contributions the U.S. Coast Guard has made to naval history. The book is recommended to anyone interested in military and naval history, either in or out of aviation.

From a Fellow Soldier of the Cross
Howard Olsen's book hits the nail on the head. If all veterans (not just from Vietnam) of every war and military experience would read and apply the information contained in this book there would be incredible healing amongst them. I am blessed to have read this book.

The Zodiac / Manson Connection
Published in Paperback by PenPower Publications ()
Author: Howard A. Davis
Average review score:

This is a shocking revalation about conspiracy and murder.
Dr. Howard Davis has hit the target with his investigation and analysis of evidence concerning the conspiracy between the infamous Zodiac Killer of San Francisco during the late sixties and the notorious psychotic Charles Manson. Dr. Davis masterfully ties in dates ,times and motives, and clearly shows, without a doubt that Charles Mansons right hand man was none other than the Zodiac Killer.

Most explosive book on Zodiac!
Howard Davis contacted Pen Power Publications after seeing author Bill Nelson on the Geraldo Show twice in October 1991. Nelson found his investigative focus hard to believe. He set out to try and prove Davis had the wrong man. After nearly seven years of working together, Pen Power Publications was pleased to help Davis publish his work. It is explosive! We often hear the different police departments asking for the public to help in solving crime, yet, in this greatest of all unsolved murder cases, law enforcement turns their back on Davis and his evidence. Now, everyone who wants to know more about the Zodiac murders can easily find answers. We are proud of his work! -The Publisher

Accurate, chillingly informative, and clearly researched.
Accuracy was very important to me and this book was researched with such minute detail. It is hard to understand why the police have not reopened this case. It is clear that there is a strong connection between the Zodiac murders and Manson that if the police do not open the case, someone should! Manson and his followers should never be allowed out of jail and if they were the Zodiac, they should be held responsible and accountable.

10 Traditional Jewish Children's Stories

Average review score:

In a town of fools, how can there be wise men?
This is a fun book. The ten stories that are included in the book are amusing and easy to read in a way that is very attractive to children. The stories of Chelm have not failed to get a laugh (sometimes a little giggle and sometimes something more) each time that we have read them. However, the book goes one step beyond the stories themselves. Every story is followed by 3-4 questions that you can ask your children after reading the story. The questions can be helpful in prodding your child to think about some of the deeper meanings behind the story as well as to measure their understanding of what makes the people of Chelm foolish yet, ultimately, wise in their simple ways. This book is a keeper.

excelent
a great book about jewish stories and excelent to share with your children. a great way to incoorperate ones faith into a story you can share with your child

138 Quick Ideas to Get More Clients
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (08 October, 1993)
Authors: Howard L. Shenson and Jerry R. Wilson
Average review score:

Idea Generator
I have read much of Shenson's work since the late '70s, and still find value in them ('tho he's been dead for many years). His self-proclaimed title of the 'consultant's consultant' has now been assumed by others. But his ideas, such as the listing in this book still serve to provide value in themselves. As a practicing independent consultant,I find the greatest value of this list, however, is as a 'trigger' to thought that causes me to come up with additional ideas. It is for this reason that I rate it so highly.

Many Helpful Marketing Ideas Most Consultants Don't Use!
The authors start off by saying, "You can be the most terrific speaker, consultant, attorney, engineer or professional the world has ever seen, but to really succeed, you must successfully sell your services." The key element of this selling is summarized as " . . . to really succeed means to differentiate yourself from others." The authors go on to point out that the massive waves of downsizing are creating much more competition all the time, requiring consultants to improve their marketing continuously.

Here are some examples of the gems in this book:

-- "don't quit marketing" -- many consultants only market when they do not have enough business. You are advised to always spend 15-25 percent of your time in this area.

-- market only to decision-makers -- the gate keepers have to let you in before you can make the sale. Spending time with gate keepers though quickly becomes wasted time.

-- make selling your services your number one task so it always takes priority

-- be seen as an expert in your field based on recent research you have conducted

-- try to market people through the insights you get from your research

-- use wasted time to work on marketing (such as downtime sitting in an airport)

-- whenever you mail your card to someone, include two so one can be shared

-- ask all of your contacts for referrals.

Once you are working on these things, here are some other good ideas:

-- create an environment in which making a referral seems like their idea

-- aim your publicity efforts to generate qualified leads

-- quote fees on a fixed price basis

-- let clients know that you will make them self-sufficient.

One of the good aspects of the book is that it does not seem to have any overtly bad advice in it. Some bits of advice I would question, but it certainly won't get you into trouble.

The main weakness of the book is that the ideas are presented at a summary level. Most people will need more detailed information to be able to implement the concepts. As a starting point, I suggest you read Networlding, Socratic Selling, and Publicity Power(all of which I have also reviewed).

If you do not have a marketing plan for your consulting practice, reading this book will be good background for helping you prepare one.

The key point of this book is to help you overcome your stalled thinking that professionals do not have to market. Good work will be enough. Unless you are already a well-known authority with more demand than you can handle, your good work will only take you so far.

Good luck in finding more clients so you can help more people achieve 2,000 percent solutions!
